Keyboard layouts and a mobile keyboard for Erzya Latin script are now available

VALKS now has a new section with tools for writing Erzya in Latin script. You can install keyboard layouts and supporting tools for different systems: Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, and iOS.

The Erzya Latin script used in VALKS includes letters with diacritics. These characters are difficult to type manually, especially on a phone or with a standard Russian or English keyboard. That is why we have prepared dedicated tools that make it faster and easier to type Erzya words accurately.

The section includes:

• keyboard layouts for desktop systems;

• a mobile keyboard via Keyman;

• installation instructions;

• options for automatic replacement of character combinations;

• additional tools for those who regularly work with Erzya texts.

This is important not only for the dictionary. A proper keyboard is needed for correspondence, learning materials, phrasebooks, audio captions, word checking, example sentences, and the future corpus of Erzya texts.

Our goal is to make Erzya usable not only in books and archives, but also in everyday digital life: on computers, on phones, in text editors, in messages, and on the website.

This section will continue to be developed. If you have installed a keyboard layout, tried the mobile keyboard, or noticed an error in the instructions, please let us know. Feedback from native speakers, editors, teachers, and everyone who regularly types Erzya texts is especially valuable.
